For nearly three decades, Akshay Kumar has remained one of Bollywood’s most bankable and prolific stars. Known for his versatility, work ethic, and ability to straddle genres — from action and comedy to drama and social message films — Kumar has consistently delivered hits and built an enviable career. But even for a seasoned star like him, the last couple of years proved testing. The once invincible Kumar saw his reputation as a sure-shot opener at the box office wobble. The perception that his films were suffering due to rushed productions and lack of innovation only added to the challenge.The Turning Point: Sky Force SoarsAfter months of recalibration and strategic project choices, Akshay Kumar found his breakthrough moment in Sky Force. I Adore This Sweet Story About Giving Maggie Smith Her ‘Favorite Day On a Set’ Ever While Filming Downton Abbey
Matthew Goode came aboard Downton Abbey in its fifth season to play Henry Talbot, who would become the second husband of Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary Crawley. However, following a brief appearance in the first Downton Abbey movie, Goode was absent from Downton Abbey: A New Era and will not be present in Downton: Abbey: The Grand Finale when it’s released on the 2025 movies schedule. While it’s a shame Henry won’t be part of this closing chapter for the historical drama saga that’s been going since 2010, I do adore the memory he recently shared about his involvement in giving the late Maggie Smith her “favorite day on a set” on the original series.
Goode has been making the press rounds to promote his new TV show Dept. Qwhich can be streamed now with a Netflix subscription. In an interview with Deadlinethe actor mentioned how he has “great stories” from the sets of Downton Abbeyincluding the aforementioned moment with Smith, who played Lady Violet Crawley. Goode started by saying:
It was the wedding of our characters, and we shot it out very secretively somewhere out in the countryside. I think in Oxford somewhere. And our green room for 20 actors was the garden of an ex-Concorde pilot. This is going to sound jolly unprofessional, and it is a bit unprofessional, but it’s fucking funny. He came out with a bottle of rosé and just put it on the table, a bottle of Minuty, which was a nice Aix-en-Province rosé. And obviously all the other actors, they looked at it and they’re like, ‘No. Well, obviously we can’t do that.’ I’m just a bit naughty. I don’t know if it’s coming across or not. And it was really hot, and it was looking at me and the perspiration was rolling down the bottle and I said, ‘I’ll have a glass, thank you so much.’
Ok, drinking on the job normally is never a good idea, particularly if you’re an actor having to spout off a lot of lines. However, given the hot weather and that Matthew Goode presumably didn’t have to get in front of the cameras anytime soon, I also get why he asked for the glass of the rosé. He continued:
And I sat and I quaffed it bloody quickly. And I said, ‘Is it OK if I have another one?’ And then you started to see all the other actors, particularly the ones that didn’t have any lines that day, just a big ensemble piece, none of us had that much to do, really. So we all started drinking. We went through 22 bottles of rosé. No one was drunk. But my god, were we merry. And if you’ve made Maggie Smith happy, then it can’t be wrong.
I’m glad Maggie Smith got a kick out of the alcohol-fueled shenanigans that day, so I guess kudos to Matthew Goode for deciding to imbibe a little bit. Had all those actors and extras needed to be available for scenes soon after, then it had the potential to be a disaster. Instead, Maggie Smith ended the day with a cherished memory, and clearly it still means a lot to Goode. He concluded by saying this about the aforementioned pilot who had the garden:
He was a gentleman and it was a gorgeous house and gorgeous garden as well. And also we gave them good stories because then suddenly they’ve got a ton of half-cut, quite famous people in their garden having great fun. So, they’ve got anecdotes for the rest of their life. I wouldn’t do it again though for any future producers listening.
That’s wise of him to provide assurances that this isn’t regular behavior for him. At least Downton Abbey fans now have another wonderful moment from Maggie Smith’s life to think about. Smith’s time in the franchise came to an end in Downton Abbey: A New Erawhen she passed away in 1928 surrounded by her loved ones. A New Era was released in May 2022, and in September 2024, Smith died at the age of 89.
While both the actress and her character are gone, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will pay tribute to Maggie Smith, and Michelle Dockery described the movie as a “real tribute” to her. CNN Correspondent Detained By LAPD, Camera Crew Arrested
CNN National Correspondent Jason Carroll, who has been reporting on the unrest in Los Angeles for the past few days, found himself a part of the story tonight when he was detained and briefly questioned by Police in Los Angeles.
During a live shot, Carroll is heard telling police his name and then seen being walked away with his hands behind his back.
A police officer is then heard saying, “We’re letting you go. You can’t come back. If you come back, you will be arrested.”
Carroll is heard to say, “Ok.”

CNN later reported that, while Carroll was released, two members of his camera crew were arrested.
Carroll described the scene to Laura Coates back in the studio: “I was walking over to the officer, tried to explain who I was, who I was with. He said, I’d like you to turn around. I turned around, I put my hands behind my back. They did not put me in zip ties, but they did grab both my hands as I was escorted over to the side, they said, you are being detained.”
Carroll is not the first member of the press to get caught between police and protesters. On Sunday, Lauren Tomasi, the U.S. correspondent for Australia’s 9News, appeared to be shot by a rubber bullet while reporting on the immigration protests. Nick Stern, a British news photographer, reportedly needed emergency surgery over the weekend after sustaining a leg wound during the clashes.
A coalition of 27 press and civil liberties advocacy groups wrote to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem today “to express alarm that federal officers may have violated the First Amendment rights of journalists covering recent protests and unrest related to immigration enforcement in the Los Angeles area.”
The coalition, led by the Los Angeles Press Club, First Amendment Coalition and Freedom of the Press Foundation, further wrote that “The press plays an essential role in our democracy as the public’s eyes and ears. The timely reporting of breaking news is necessary to provide the public with complete information, especially about controversial events.
“A number of reports suggest that federal officers have indiscriminately used force or deployed munitions such as tear gas or pepper balls that caused significant injuries to journalists. In some cases, federal officers appear to have deliberately targeted journalists who were doing nothing more than their job covering the news.”
The LA Press Club referred to at least 24 “documented” instances of journalists being targeted by law enforcement while covering the protests in Los Angeles between June 6-8, and multiple media workers report having been shot by police with less-than-lethal munitions.
Those journalists included Southern California News Group’s Ryanne Mena, freelance journalists Anthony Cabassa and Sean Beckner-Carmitchel, The Southlander’s Ben Camacho, British photojournalist Nick Stern, and LA Taco’s Lexis Olivier-Ray.

SSMB29, the highly anticipated film directed by SS Rajamouliis generating immense buzz. The film, reportedly starring Priyanka Chopra and Mahesh Babu, is set to be an epic production. Nicole Scherzinger Wins Her First Tony Award

On June 8, Nicole Scherzinger, 46, won her first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her role as Norma Desmond, a has-been staging a comeback in Sunset Blvd, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway adaptation of the 1950 film by the same name.
“Thank you,” Scherzinger said through tears while accepting the award at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, “for making this little Hawaiian Ukranian Filipino girl’s dream come true.” She then fretted about how quickly the seconds were ticking by and mentioned more than once how grueling the Broadway schedule is as she thanked her mother, who had her at 18, her father and sister, and her entire ohanaor family. She also thanked composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Scherzinger, who hails from Kentucky, has become one of the most prominent Asian Pacific stage actors. She’s cited The miserable, The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstarand Miss Saigon as some of her own favorite musicals.
Before she was a Broadway star, Scherzinger was a member of the bestselling pop group the Pussycat Dolls. Because of her experience chasing stardom as a pop singer, she says she can relate to her Sunset Blvd character Norma Desmond.
“Time is fleeting for all of us, and Norma struggled with abandonment, deep loneliness, feeling unseen, and not accepted,” Scherzinger told TIME for a recent profile. “A lot of us feel that way, especially in this industry.”
Scherzinger is also on TIME’s 2025 list of the most influential people in the world. In a tribute to Scherzinger for the list, Tony Award-winning actor and singer Patti LuPone described her performance as “courageous, audacious, mesmerizing, elegantly beautiful, and ultimately heartbreaking,” and capped it off with “Brava, Diva.”
Earlier this week, Sunset Blvd. announced a final extension on Broadway with performances through July 20.
Scherzinger said she never felt like she belonged as a child, but “You all have made me feel that I belong and I have come home at last. So if theres anyone out there who feels like they don’t belong or your time hasnt come,” she continued, “don’t give up, just keep on giving and giving because the world needs your love and your light more than ever now.”

‘This is an extortion racket’
Manish Gupta also shared that he has given his driver regular salary, so there was no argument or fight between them.
Director Manish Gupta, who has been booked by Versova police for allegedly attacking his driver, has denied all the allegations and noted that these are all “false accusations”.
Speaking to ANI, Manish said, “Ye bilkul hi jhutha aarop hai (This is a false accusation)… a hundred per cent false accusation. There was no fight between that driver and me, Rajebul Lashkar. Usne police mein jaaake jhuthi statement di hai (He went to the police and gave a false statement). And on that basis, he filed an FIR. He did this to put my reputation at risk. So that I come under pressure and he can extort more money from me.”
He also opened up on the accusation that he has not paid salary to his driver’s timely, “This accusation is 100% false. I will show you my bank statement for the past 3 years. You will see that every month, I have paid him his entire salary on time. So, the first sentence in the FIR is false that I never paid him salary on time, that’s why he fought with me. His first sentence is false. The first false sentence in his statement, in the FIR, is proof that his entire allegation is false. It is proof that he is lying. You can see my bank statement. …There is a detail of his salary every month for the past 3 years.”

You can see my bank statement. The driver’s name, amount, and date are clearly shown in this. He has received his salary on time every month for the past 3 years. On top of that, he has been given an advance. I have given him more advance than salary many times. The person who has given him a salary on time every month for the past 3 years, he (driver) has given a statement to file an FIR that he has never paid his salary on time. That’s why he has fought with me. This is a complete lie. When this man starts his statement with a false sentence, you can understand that the whole statement is a lie. He has a malafide intention. Uska motive hai paise aethna..This is an extortion racket and nothing else. So he made this salary just a topic. He wanted to make a topic and show that there was a fight. That’s why he has raised this issue of salary. “
The director also shared that he has been contributing to the police investigation. “I have submitted my statement to the police. I will show you a copy of the statement. I have given a statement. They stamped it, signed it and gave me an acknowledgement. And in the statement, I said everything… I told them that this man has given you a false statement. And on the basis of a false statement, he has filed an FIR. That is, it is 100% a lie.”
“There will be no compromise at all. The trend of extortion racket is very dangerous for our country, and especially for Bollywood personalities. Because we are a soft target, we have to stop these extortionists…So we are taking legal action. And we are initiating criminal proceedings against this man…Also, I want to add that he has a criminal background,” he added.

“[It] will always be one of the most fun, chaotic and magical chapters of my life. It was the honor of a lifetime to help reboot such an iconic franchise,” Brynn wrote via her Instagram Story. “From day one, I’ve believed Fragment is a fan’s show — we’re just temporary custodians of something that truly belongs to the viewers. I hope I made you laugh (a lot), cry (a little), and more than anything — I hope there’s a TV in heaven so that Mimi (who LIVED for her shows) could watch me and be proud.”
