I’m going to be honest with you here: I don’t think I’ve ever given my dad a gift he’s liked for Father’s Day. It’s not that I haven’t tried, but I’ve been so conditioned by the Greeting Card Industrial Complex™ to believe that dads are supposed to like just a handful of things: barbecuing, fishing, beer, and baseball. Whenever Father’s Day rolls around, I feel like I have amnesia: I no longer remember a single thing about the man who raised me.
It’s probably awful for dads across the United States: having to unwrap another pair of barbecue tongs, novelty socks, or beer coozie and not look disappointed. The Academy Awards should have a new category just for dads, and I would nominate my own father. The enthusiasm in which he has talked about fly fishing books and engraved money clips from the mall would rival anyone in Hollywood.
But as the saying goes, “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.” So, here I am, doing my best to help you avoid the mistakes I’ve made over the years. Save the novelty ties and hot sauce samplers for another time. This year, we’re celebrating dad with style and panache. Here are twelve hand-selected, elevated gifts your dad will actually want this year.
