Discussion on free elementary education next week: minister

Surabaya (Antara) – Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti has said his ministry will discuss the recent Constitutional Court (MK) ruling on providing free education at the elementary (SD) and junior high school (SMP) levels nationally next week.

“I do not know yet; it will be discussed at the meeting next week,” he told journalists at the Muhammadiyah University (UM), Surabaya, on Tuesday.

The minister asked the public to wait for the Ministry of State Secretary’s official announcement regarding the implementation of the policy.

“Just wait for the official announcement from the State Secretary minister,” he said.

Earlier, the Constitutional Court issued a ruling mandating free elementary and junior high school education at both public and private schools.

The ruling was based on a request from the Indonesian Education Monitoring Network (JPPI) for a judicial review of Article 34 Paragraph (2) of the National Education System Law (SISDIKNAS).
