How this Taiwanese hospital enhances supply chain management with advanced analytics

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, has been validated for Stage 6 of the HIMSS Analytics Maturity Assessment Model.

The AMAM measures an organisation’s capabilities in healthcare analytics.

WHY IT MATTERS

A major challenge in implementing advanced analytics at CGMH, Linkou was the integration of diverse internal and external data sources into a consolidated data warehouse while maintaining data quality and privacy.

Professor Chien-Tzung Chen, superintendent of CGMH, Linkou, explained to Healthcare IT News how they overcame this by preparing for a Stage 6 AMAM validation.

“We implemented robust governance frameworks, aligned analytics initiatives with clinical and operational KPIs, and formed interdisciplinary teams to drive analytics development. We also upgraded our data platform, streamlined dashboard design for greater accessibility, and automated several supply chain and clinical processes based on analytics insights.”

“The single, consolidated data warehouse is an impressive collection of many types of data, originating both in-house as well as externally from other healthcare providers and government agencies,” the HIMSS validation team said about CGMH, Linkou’s effort to improve its data warehousing.

“This makes it a tremendously powerful tool for executives and clinicians to understand and analyse data and generate insights to improve clinical care and organisational performance.”

During the assessment, the hospital also demonstrated its Smart Inventory Management System, which helps prevent stockouts and overstocking during crises. The system, which was introduced prior to the global pandemic, proved to be particularly effective during the thick of the pandemic in the first quarter of 2020, achieving a stockout rate of less than 1%. It enhanced supply chain reliability through real-time updates and automated restocking.

“The use of analytics in supply chain management and the internal stock control system to automatically generate new orders, adjust the baseline inventory, leading to a less than 1% stockout rate, is a good example of analytics in action. The success of this system is emphasised by CGMH, Linkou, having minimal stock disruption or shortages during the COVID-19 crisis period – an achievement few others can claim,” the HIMSS validation team commented.

THE LARGER TREND

CGMH, Linkou is currently working to be validated for Stage 7 of the AMAM, which will add to its existing Stage 7 HIMSS digital maturity model validations: Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model, Digital Imaging Adoption Model, and Infrastructure Adoption Model.

“In addition, we plan to further integrate population health data, including epidemiological and environmental data, into our data warehouse. We will also expand clinical use cases in predictive analytics to support early disease detection and treatment optimisation, ensuring data-driven insights are embedded in daily clinical workflows,” Prof Chen also shared.

Meanwhile, last year, the hospital also achieved a perfect score in the 2024 HIMSS Digital Health Indicatorreflecting its continued efforts and progress in advancing digital health maturity.

ON THE RECORD

“Achieving Stage 6 of the HIMSS AMAM is a significant milestone for CGMH, Linkou. It demonstrates our commitment to data-driven decision-making and high-quality patient care. This recognition affirms that our analytics infrastructure, governance, and clinical applications are not only mature but also effectively contribute to organisational performance and patient outcomes,” Prof Chen stated.

“Advanced analytics helps us make informed decisions, personalise treatment plans, reduce unnecessary procedures, and allocate resources more efficiently – all leading to improved patient outcomes and operational performance,” he emphasised.
