If you also believe that Lili Reinhart was the Meryl Streep of Riverdaleyou’ll be happy to know that the actress’ upcoming queer series Hal & Harper is finally headed to your TV screen.
Mubi has acquired the rights to the eight-episode show, which was created and directed by star Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth). Raiff and Reinhart play the eponymous codependent siblings Hal and Harper as both elementary schoolers growing up with their single father (Mark Ruffalo) and as messy 20-somethings trying to figure out their lives while their dad starts a new family with his girlfriend Kate (Betty Gilpin).
“MUBI is the perfect home for our very specific family show,” Raiff said in a statement to Deadline. “They’re a singular platform that understands the art they’re putting out. I am in awe of what they’ve done recently and am excited to be a part of the family.”
Reinhart, who is bisexual, is not only playing an eldest daughter who’s grappling for meaning after years of caring for her father and younger brother without boundaries; she’s also kissing girls. Namely, The Sex Lives of College Girls star Alyah Chanelle Scott, who plays her longtime girlfriend Jesse, and series EP Addison Timlin, who plays her flirtatious co-worker Audrey.
“Reinhart, in particular, is a force of nature here, one of the quieter characters who often feels like she’s ready to burst,” Collider’s Sundance Film Festival review of Hal & Harper notes. “Especially in the aforementioned flashbacks, Reinhart makes Harper one of the most empathetic and harrowing characters, and there’s an honesty and truth in the way she explores this trauma.”
Rounding out the cast is Bottoms break-out star Havana Rose Liu. Although she sadly isn’t involved in any sapphic shenanigans as far as we can tell, she nevertheless recurs as Hal’s on-again, off-again love interest Abby.
Whether you’re ready to see Reinhart become the next Riverdale star to appear in an acclaimed project, or you’re simply looking for an intriguing family indie with a side of queerness, you can check out Hal & Harper when it comes to Mubi this fall.
