The crossing of a US-designated island chain in the Western Pacific by a Chinese carrier group marks an increase in Beijing’s “operational tempo” that the Philippines should pay heed to, observers say.
They warn, however, that a “delicate balance” should still be maintained to avoid any escalation amid calls for vigilance.

Earlier this week, the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) Navy dispatched two aircraft carriers to conduct operations beyond the “first island chain”. This series of land masses, part of a US containment strategy to deter Chinese military presence, stretches from Japan’s Okinawa to Taiwan and the Philippines.
The carriers were deployed to test capabilities in “far seas defence”, PLA Navy spokesman Senior Captain Wang Xuemeng confirmed on Tuesday as the Chinese continued to share photos online of aircraft carriers Liaoning and Shandong.
Wang said the routine training was organised “in accordance with the annual plan” and the deployments were in compliance “with relevant international laws and practices and not directed against any specific country or target”.
The Provincial Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, ensured the readiness of the provincial government in implementing the Constitutional Court ruling regarding free education provided by state and private schools.
According to Anung, DKI Jakarta is currently running a pilot project for a free school programme in 40 private schools. This pilot project, he believes, can accelerate the implementation of free education in DKI Jakarta. Furthermore, DKI Jakarta has relative advantages in human resources and financial independence.
In addition, Anung highlighted the problem of withheld diplomas that often occurs in private schools, which, according to him, can be resolved with the free education programme.
“The most important thing is that there are no more diplomas that are withheld,” he remarked to the press on Tuesday, the 10th of June.
Meanwhile, the Head of the West Jakarta Region II Education Sub-agency, Diding Wahyudin, stated that the private schools selected to participate in the free education programme are located in the Grogol, Petamburan, and Kebon Jeruk districts.

However, Wahyudin has not explained when the free private school programme will be officially implemented.
“Still waiting for the process of completing the free school regulations,” he added.
In early May, the DKI Jakarta Education Office stated that the free private school programme, specifically, would be tested in the new 2025/2026 academic year. Meanwhile, recently, the Constitutional Court granted the judicial review lawsuit against Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System. The Constitutional Court ordered that private basic education be free of fees.
One of Indonesia’s largest nickel-mining companies, which supplies a mineral critical to the global electric car industry, did not tell the public that local drinking water was polluted, according to documents seen by the Guardian.
Indonesia has become the world’s biggest producer of nickel, used in the production of wind turbines, solar panels and electric vehicle batteries. But observers have voiced concerns that regulatory oversight in the country has failed to keep up with the rush to develop mines to satisfy booming global demand.
Leaked documents seen by the Guardian suggest a source of drinking water close to a $1bn (£800m) mining project owned by the Indonesia-based Harita Group on remote Obi Island, was contaminated with unsafe levels of hexavalent chromium (Cr6), the cancer-causing chemical more widely known for its role in the Erin Brockovich story and film.
The leak comes after a Guardian investigation into pollution at the site in 2022 was disputed by the mining company, which extracts and processes nickel for use in EV batteries.
For the 2022 investigation, water samples collected from a spring in the village of Kawasi, less than 200 metres from the mining site, were tested at government-certified laboratories and suggested high levels of contamination from carcinogenic Cr6 of 60 parts per billion (ppb). The maximum contaminant level allowed by law in Indonesia is 50ppb.
In response to the Guardian’s original investigation, a Harita company said its own results had shown that the spring water was suitable for consumption and met the quality standards set by the Indonesian government.
However, the leaked documents and emails suggest a Harita company found the Cr6 values in Kawasi spring, used as drinking water by villagers, in excess of Indonesian quality standards just one day after its statement to the contrary. It then found even higher values in subsequent days. It does not appear to have made this data public.

The material suggests tests of Kawasi’s spring water undertaken by a Harita company found Cr6 concentrations of 70ppb on 1 February 2022, one day after the Harita company provided its statement to the Guardian. On 7 February 2022 a value of 128ppb was recorded.
A weekly environment report from December 2022 reported that values of 140ppb had been recorded at the spring.
Harita has not responded to requests for comment on the leaked material and test results but in a press release published on its website this month, the company said it conducts periodic monitoring of the water at Kawasi spring to ensure it is safe and uncontaminated.
Environmental health experts have said the test results suggest a significant issue with pollution.
Matthew Baird, an environmental lawyer based in south-east Asia, said: “These are figures that need to be taken into account not just by the company, but also the Indonesian government.”
“Nickel is meant to be one of the transition metals [to move to a green, low-carbon economy] and we require a just transition to ensure the protection of the environment, human rights and the community,” he said.
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, has urged the Indonesian government to collaborate with digital platforms to stop the spread of online gambling content.
She made the request during a visit to tech company Meta’s headquarters in California, the United States, on Friday local time, according to a statement.
She praised Meta for actively supporting Indonesia’s efforts to fight online gambling. Indonesia is one of the countries with the highest number of online gambling content items blocked on Meta’s platforms, she noted.
“As the country with the fourth-largest number of Instagram users in the world, Indonesia needs to promote policies that can optimize the use of social media and digital platforms positively and responsibly,” she said.
According to the House Speaker, Meta’s concrete steps to block thousands of items of content and accounts linked to online gambling have helped protect the Indonesian people from illegal gambling activities.
“In the future, our digital space must be strengthened even more to make it healthier and safer for the community,” she said.
Maharani emphasized that online gambling is an illegal practice that must be addressed jointly because, in addition to violating the law, it also has a negative impact on society.
“Indonesia must continue to take various measures to fight online gambling,” she added.
The Indonesian government is currently taking steps to eradicate online gambling in the country.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs reported that in the period from October 2024 to May 2025, it has blocked access to 1.3 million items of content related to online gambling.

Fasilitas tersebut terdiri dari dua bagian: Fasilitas Pengayaan Bahan Bakar Percobaan (PFEP) dan Fasilitas Pengayaan Bahan Bakar Utama (FEP), yang dibangun di bawah tanah untuk menahan serangan udara.

Namun, apabila diperkaya hingga tingkat yang jauh lebih tinggi, yakni 90%, U-235 bisa dipakai memproduksi senjata nuklir.
Berdasarkan kesepakatan nuklir Juli 2015 (JCPOA), Iran setuju memasang tidak lebih dari 5.060 sentrifus tertua dan paling tidak efisien di Natanz selama 10 tahun. Aktivitas penelitian dan pengembangan pengayaan uranium hanya akan dilakukan di Natanz dan dibatasi selama delapan tahun.
Namun, setelah AS menarik diri dari kesepakatan tersebut di bawah Presiden Donald Trump pada tahun 2018, Iran mulai memperkaya uranium pada tingkat yang lebih tinggi, yaitu mencapai 60%. Ambang batas pengayaan uranium untuk senjata nuklir adalah 90%.

Fasilitas pengayaan uranium Fordow
Fasilitas pengayaan uranium bawah tanah Ferdow terletak di dekat Qom, sekitar 160 kilometer sebelah selatan Teheran.
Pembangunannya dibangun secara rahasia, jauh di dalam gunung. Konstruksi fasilitas ini baru terungkap pada 2009, sehingga menimbulkan kekhawatiran internasional tentang ambisi nuklir Iran.
Fordow dirancang untuk menampung sekitar 3.000 sentrifus dan sebagian besar tahan terhadap serangan udara.
Dengan menandatangani JCPOA, Iran setuju mengubah Fordow menjadi pusat penelitian dan menangguhkan aktivitas pengayaan uranium selama 15 tahun. Namun, setelah AS menarik diri dari kesepakatan tersebut, Iran melanjutkan aktivitas pengayaan uranium di sini dengan meningkatkan kadar U-235 menjadi 20% pada 2021.
Pada November 2022, Iran meningkatkan tingkat pengayaan uranium di fasilitas Fordow menjadi 60%. Iran juga mengumumkan niatnya untuk meningkatkan kapasitas pengayaan uranium secara signifikan.

Reaktor Air Berat Khandab (Arak)
Reaktor Khandab, yang sebelumnya dikenal sebagai Reaktor Air Berat Arak, adalah fasilitas nuklir Iran yang terletak di dekat Kota Khandab, Provinsi Markazi.
Dirancang sebagai reaktor penelitian, fasilitas tersebut menjadi sorotan karena kemampuannya memproduksi plutonium—yang dapat digunakan membuat senjata nuklir.

Menurut laporan IAEA sebelumnya, fasilitas itu diduga terkait dengan aspek militer dalam program nuklir Iran.
Iran membantah adanya aktivitas nuklir dan mengatakan Parchin hanya untuk penggunaan militer konvensional. Akses untuk inspeksi ke kompleks ini sangat terbatas.

The former England captain has been recognised for both his career as a footballer and his services to charity.
Beckham began his football career at Manchester United, where he made 394 appearances and scored 85 goals, before going on to play for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
He made 115 appearances for England, the third-highest of any senior men’s player, and captained his country 59 times.
Beckham has been a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF since 2005, and he also established the 7 Fund aimed at helping vulnerable children around the world.
He supports a number of charities, including the Chelsea Pensioners, Help for Heroes, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Age UK and the London Air Ambulance service.
Luke Littler has been awarded an MBE for services to darts. The 18-year-old is currently the world No 2 and the reigning world champion, the youngest in the sport’s history.
Littler has won two World Series of Darts titles, 13 PDC titles and five major titles in his professional career. He is also the youngest player to hit a televised nine-dart finish.

Billy Boston, 90, has become the first rugby league player to receive a knighthood. Boston is regarded as one of the sport’s greatest ever players having scored 571 tries in his career, placing him as the second-highest try scorer in history.
Born in Cardiff, Boston spent 15 years playing for Wigan, scoring a club-record 478 tries in 488 appearances before finishing his career with Blackpool Borough, retiring in 1970.
He also played 31 times for Great Britain, scoring 24 tries and winning the 1960 World Cup.
Virginia Wade has received a CBE for services to tennis and charity. The 79-year-old won three major singles championships – the Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon – and four major doubles titles.
Wade is the only British woman to have won titles at all four majors and was ranked as the world No 2 in singles and No 1 in doubles.
Wade serves as a patron for the charity Leadership Through Sport and is a director for Compton’s Yard Charitable Trust.
Aston Villa forward Rachel Daly has been awarded an MBE for services to football. Daly holds the joint record for the most goals in a Women’s Super League season with 22 and has won the WSL golden boot, PFA women’s players’ player of the year and player of the season awards, all in the 2022/23 season.
The 33-year-old has played 84 times for England, scoring 16 goals, and was part of the squad that won the Women’s European Championships in 2022.

Other sports stars to be recognised include two-time Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee, who has been awarded an OBE; while MBEs have been awarded to two-weight boxing world champion Natasha Jonas, former Gloucestershire bowler David Lawrence, who took 625 wickets for the county, and former golfer and Sky Sports pundit Trish Johnson.
Bryan Henderson, head of cricket and NFL at Sky Sports, has been awarded an MBE for services to cricket.
Henderson and Sanjay Patel, the former managing director of The Hundred, were heavily responsible for the planning and delivery of the short-format cricket tournament. The competition will this year deliver hundreds of millions of pounds to the game from the sale of the teams.
“I’m very honoured and humbled,” said Henderson. “It’s a tribute to all the amazing people I’ve been lucky enough to work with at Sky and in the sport I love.”
Patel added: “I feel very privileged to receive this award and to be given the opportunity to work in a sport that I love. I would like to thank the people who supported me and in particular the great team who helped build The Hundred.”
