Violent and lewd! Not Grand Theft Auto, Shakespeare’s Macbeth | Games

Last week, the Guardian spoke to the team behind Lili, a video game retelling of Macbeth, shown at the Cannes film festival. The headline quote from the piece was “Shakespeare would be writing for games today”, which I have heard many times, and does make a lot of sense. Shakespeare worked in the Elizabethan theatre, a period in which plays were considered popularist entertainment hardly worthy of analysis or preservation – just like video games today! The authorities were also concerned about the lewd and violent nature of plays and the effect they may have on the impressionable masses – ditto!

But if we agree that a 21st-century Shakespeare would be making games, what sort would he be making? If our central thesis is that Shakespeare would be interested in mass, popular entertainment, then – if we’re talking pure revenue – he would be making casual smartphone games: Tencent’s multiplayer arena battle game Honor of Kings, for example, made $2.6bn (£1.9bn) last year. However, while the Bard was certainly interested in royalty and honour (and making money), it’s hard to see Hamlet working as a multiplayer arena-based online battle game structured into an endless series of fast-paced skirmishes. Our titular hero would barely get out the words, “O, that this too too solid flesh would melt, thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!” before being vaporised in a scorching barrage attack. For similar reasons, I can’t see Shakespeare making battle royale games such as Fortnite because, while he certainly liked a battle and lots of deaths, there’s not a lot of room for narrative complexity or rousing military rhetoric when the sole aim is to shoot as many people as possible while dressed as a giant banana or Sabrina Carpenter.

No, I think if Shakespeare was magically reincarnated in the first quarter of the 21st century, there is only one genre he’d be working in: the open-world role-playing adventure. Here, he’d have the time and space to weave complex narratives involving dozens of characters and diverse environments. King Lear’s moors would become a desolate explorable wasteland, much like the post-apocalyptic hellscapes of Fallout or Death Stranding; Macbeth’s castle would resemble the haunted dungeons of Elden Ring or The Witcher 3; the Verona of Romeo and Juliet would be a beautiful, troubled take on GTA’s Los Santos. Shakespeare’s major thematic obsessions – war, revenge, madness and the nature of free will – are all major elements in fantasy RPGs; his ability to weave in all classes, from the lowest peasants to the most vainglorious kings, is reflected in the social strata of the great open-world titles. Shakespeare’s histories mixed real-life and fictional characters, as does the Assassin’s Creed series, titles that are also interested in the classic Shakespearean concerns of identity, disguise and illusion.

‘This castle hath a pleasant seat’ … The Witcher 3, an open-world RPG of the sort that might inspire a reincarnated Bard. Photograph: CD Projekt Red

More broadly, open-world games have the same sort of freewheeling structure and psychological flexibility as Shakespeare’s plays. They have subplots and side quests, they have nonlinear timelines and complicated, morally ambiguous characters; they are expansive and baggy, and wide open to varied interpretation. Vitally, open-world games let the spectator into the narrative as a viewer and an actor; similarly Shakespeare wanted his audiences to be drawn into the action, using asides, quips and monologues to break down the divide between stage and pit. Loud, opinionated and combative, video game players have much more in common with Shakespeare’s Elizabethan audiences than polite modern theatregoers.

This potential intersection between Shakespeare and open-world games is quietly gaining traction. A few years ago the RSC employed three artists to consider the interplay of live theatre with technology and one of them, the digital artist Adam Clarke, tested ideas for hosting Shakespeare performances within Minecraft. More recently, we saw the brilliant documentary Grand Theft Hamlet about an attempt to stage Hamlet within Grand Theft Auto during the Covid lockdowns. What, after all, is an open-world online video game if not a technological rendering of Shakespeare’s fundamental philosophy: all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.

It is always intriguing to see highly recognisable video game genres getting clever reinterpretations. Rift Riff by Dutch game designer Adriaan de Jongh and his small team is a tower defence game like, say, Plants vs. Zombies, except here the landscape is much more open and there are little tactical additions, such as being able to lay down the foundations for new towers before you have gathered the required resources to build them, which makes planning fun and creative. Add in the lovely, inviting visuals and sound effects and you have a captivating strategy sim suitable for newcomers and veterans alike.

Candidate for the weirdest game … Seaman. Photograph: Sega

This one came to us from Andy on email who asked:

What’s the strangest game you have ever played? Last year I played Harold Halibut on Game Pass, which I think is probably the weirdest game I’ve ever experienced. I’d love to hear about other strange gaming experiences.

I’ve played a lot of games that are famously weird, such as Seaman (look after a talking fish with the voice of Leonard Nimoy), Mister Mosquito (you’re a mosquito) and Katamari Wave (you’re making giant balls of junk for the king of the universe), but I’ve also played many more obscure weird games, such as Spectrum classic Fat Worm Blows A Sparky (you’re a microscopic worm trapped in your own computer), the bizarre Amiga adventure Tass Times in Tonetown (you’re trapped in an alternative 1980s punk dimension) and the PlayStation 2 voyeur sim, Polaroid Pete (you’re a photographer trying to take snaps of weird things happening in local parks).

My favourite is Sega’s Emergency Call Ambulancewhich is like Crazy Taxi except you’re driving an ambulance with a critically ill patient in the back and if you get into too many collisions you have to give them CPR or they die. This was a big arcade release, but somehow never made it to home consoles. I simply cannot understand why.

Terrifying Google note warns billions of phone users of 5 bank-raiding texts sent by crooks ‘without fear of punishment’

GOOGLE has warned phone users of five bank-raiding texts sent by crooks.

Cybercriminals are using a diverse set of tactics to prey on customers.

It comes amid a recent Federal Trade Commission data which found that Google’s reported fraud losses jumped 25% to $12.5 billion (£10.5 billion) in 2024.

“Scammers are more effective and act without fear of punishment when people are uninformed about fraud and scam tactics,” Google warned.

    Customer support scams

Scammers trick customers by impersonating representatives from prominent companies.

They prey on anxieties around safety and IT issues to access sensitive information.

It’s important to double check the number which has called you is legitimate before proceeding with the call.

    Malvertizing

Some scammers use fake online ads to spread malware.

Google researchers say that scammers are increasingly targeting more sophisticated users, including people with valuable online assets, like crypto wallets, and social media influencers.

To swat away the offers, make sure you’re being extra careful when anyone offers free versions of licenced software.

    Fake travel websites

As more and more Brits book their sun-soaked getaways, criminals are licking their lips.

Scammers present themselves as genuine travel agencies or hotels before offering holidaymakers package deals on summer getaways.

Debit card warning after $500 vanishes from woman’s bank account within minutes – why credit is safer at checkout

Just make sure you’re arranging your itinerary with reputable hotels and airlines.

    Package-tracking scams

Cybercriminals are also masquerading as legitimate courier outfits and online retailers.

The shameless crooks trick buyers into paying eye-watering add-on fees to speed up the delivery time.

If you’re expecting a package, go straight to the delivery company’s site to check the status.

    Toll road scams

With many toll roads operating a cash free system, opportunists are filling motorists’ inboxes with phoney texts demanding they pay for unpaid tolls.

If you think the fee demand is genuine, get in touch with the company itself before you hand over the cash.

And remember not to click on links from unknown phone numbers or emails.

    TIME TO TRY PASSKEYS?

Here’s what security expert Chris Hauk, Consumer Privacy Advocate at Pixel Privacy, told The Sun…

“Passwords are both hard to remember and in most cases, easy to guess.

“I would venture to say that most users (especially older users) will reuse passwords, simply because of all of the websites and apps that require sign-ins.

“While password managers do help, they are at best, a stopgap measure and do not offer full-ranging security for your login information.

“Passkeys offer the advantage of eliminating the need to enter an email address and password to log in.

“This is especially handy when users are logging in on an iPhone or Android device.

“Passkeys have multiple advantages over passwords. Passkeys cannot be shared or guessed.

“Passkeys are unique to the website or app they are created for, so they cannot be used to login elsewhere like a reused password can.

“Plus, passkeys cannot be stolen in a data breach, as the passkeys are not stored on the company’s servers.

“But are instead are a private key stored only on your device, where biometric authentication (like face ID or Touch ID) is required to use the passkey.”

Passkeys are an alternative to passwords that’s much safer and faster.

These rely on your face, fingerprint or a simple passcode to login.

As such, passkeys can’t be guessed and they’re impossible to re-use too.

And passwords can be leaked online – whereas a passkey can’t.

People mistakenly re-use passwords as well, because they’re easy to forget.

Re-used passwords make it all too easy for hackers to break into multiple of your accounts, and simple log-ins are easy to guess.

Passkeys have none of these problems, making them much more secure.

A number of tech companies such as Google are pushing people to switch from passwords to passkeys.

Major warning to billions of WhatsApp users over worrying ‘cloning’ tool that tricks victims into handing over £1,000s

AN URGENT warning has gone out to WhatsApp users after news broke of a scam which could cost users thousands of pounds.

The sinister scheme sees hackers “cloning” leading investment firms in order to take their victims’ cash.

    1

Millions of WhatsApp users have been warned about a chilling scamCredit: Getty

The Investment Association found that there was a 57 per cent surge in cloning scams during the second half of 2024.

Often, the scam begins with users being added to fake WhatsApp groups, emails or websites.

Scammers make sure the group looks as though it was created by a reputable investment company, before inviting users to transfer their money.

By pretending to invest your money, the scammers can then duplicate your details – allowing them to steal your cash.

According to experts, one in four of the attempts proved successful.

In total, nearly 500 “cloning” attempts were recorded by the Investment Association alone.

A staggering £2.7 million has been lost through the scam.

Adrian Hood, a financial crime expert said: “The growth of AI is likely to see increasingly sophisticated scams, with criminals better able to mimic legitimate firms.”

Chilling vid outlines the dangers posed by sex extortion

In 2024, £1.7 million was recovered from scammers out of a total loss of £5.4 million through fraud.

The news come after Google issued an urgent warning to its users.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, Google’s reported fraud losses jumped to $12.5 billion in 2024.

In response, the tech company said: “Scammers are more effective and act without fear of punishment when people are uninformed about fraud and scam tactics.”

Using AI technology, scammers can impersonate representatives from prominent companies.

Victims with valuable online assets, including crypto wallets, and social media influencers are also being increasingly targeted.

How to keep yourself safe from hackers and scammers

FOLLOW these steps to protect yourself from hackers in the future:

    1. Make a ‘strong’ password with 8 or more characters and a combination of upper case characters, numbers and symbols
    2. Don’t do online banking on public WiFi, unless absolutely necessary
    3. Don’t click on dodgy email links claiming to be from banks
    4. Use different passwords for different sites
    5. Never re-use your main email password
    6. Use anti-virus software
    7. Don’t accept Facebook friend requests or LinkedIn invitations from people you don’t know
    8. Think before you put personal info on social media
    9. Find My iPhone, Android Lost and BlackBerry Protect all allow you to remotely wipe a stolen phone. Set this feature up
    10. Only shop online on secure sites

  • How social media lies fuelled a rush to war between India and Pakistan | India

How social media lies fuelled a rush to war between India and Pakistan | India

As missiles and drones crisscrossed the night skies above India and Pakistan earlier this month, another invisible war was taking place.

Not long after the Indian government announced Operation Sindoor, the military offensive against Pakistan triggered by a militant attack in Kashmir that Delhi blamed on Islamabad, reports of major Pakistani defeats began to circulate online.

What began as disparate claims on social media platforms such as X soon became a cacophony of declarations of India’s military might, broadcast as “breaking news” and “exclusives” on the country’s biggest news programmes.

According to these posts and reports, India had variously shot down multiple Pakistani jets, captured a Pakistani pilot as well as Karachi port and taken over the Pakistani city of Lahore. Another false claim was that Pakistan’s powerful military chief had been arrested and a coup had taken place. “We’ll be having breakfast in Rawalpindi tomorrow,” was a widely reshared post in the midst of hostilities, referring to the Pakistani city where its military is headquartered.

Many of these claims were accompanied by footage of explosions, crumbling structures and missiles being shot from the sky. The problem was, none of them were true.

    ‘Global trend in hybrid warfare’

A ceasefire on 10 May brought the two countries back from the brink of all-out war after the latest conflict, which marked the biggest crisis in decades between the nuclear-armed rivals, and was ignited after militants opened fire at a beauty spot in Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing 26 people, mainly Indian tourists. India blamed Pakistan for the attack – a charge Islamabad has denied.

Yet even as military hostilities have ceased, analysts, factcheckers and activists have documented how a fully fledged war of disinformation took place online.

Misinformation and disinformation was also being circulated widely in Pakistan. The Pakistan government removed a ban on X shortly before the conflict broke out, and researchers found it immediately became a source of misinformation, though not on the same scale as in India.

A fake image on X purporting to show fighter planes on fire in Udhamphur, India. Photograph: X

Recycled and AI-generated footage purportedly showing Pakistani military victories was shared widely on social media and then amplified by both its mainstream media, respected journalists and government ministers to make fake claims such as the capture of an Indian pilot, a coup in the Indian army and Pakistani strikes wiping out India’s defences.

There were also widely circulated fake reports that a Pakistani cyber-attack had wiped out most of the Indian power grid and that Indian soldiers had raised a white flag in surrender. In particular, video game simulations proved to be a popular tool in spreading disinformation about Pakistan “delivering justice” against India.

A report into the social media war that surrounded the India-Pakistan conflict, released last week by the civil society organisation The London Story, detailed how X and Facebook “became fertile ground for the spread of war narratives, hate speech, and emotionally manipulative disinformation” and “drivers of nationalist incitement” in both countries.

In a written statement, a spokesperson for Meta, the owner of Facebook, said it had taken “significant steps to fight the spread of misinformation”, including removing content and labelling and reducing the reach of stories marked as false by their factcheckers.

While disinformation and misinformation were rampant on both sides, in India “the scale went beyond what we have seen before”, said Joyojeet Pal, associate professor at the school of information at the University of Michigan.

Pal is among those arguing that the misinformation campaign went beyond the usual nationalist propaganda often seen in both India and Pakistan: “This had the power to push two nuclear armed countries closer to war.”

Fake images claiming to show India’s Narendra Modi stadium in ruins were shared and debunked on X. Photograph: X

Analysts say that it is evidence of a new digital frontier in warfare, where an onslaught of tactical misinformation is used to manipulate the narrative and escalate tensions. Factcheckers say misinformation including the repurposing of old footage and widespread fake claims of military victories mirrored much of what had come out of Russia in the early days of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Washington DC-based Centre for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH), which tracked and documented the misinformation coming from both sides, warned that the weaponisation of misinformation and disinformation in the the most recent India-Pakistan conflict was “not an isolated phenomenon, but part of a broader global trend in hybrid warfare”.

Raqib Hameed Naik, the executive director of CSOH, said there had been “a pretty catastrophic failure” on the part of social media platforms to moderate and control the scale of disinformation that was being generated from both India and Pakistan. Of the 427 most concerning posts CSOH examined on X, some of which had almost 10m views, only 73 had been flagged with a warning. X did not respond to request for comment.

Fabricated reports from India first emerged largely on X and Facebook, Naik said, often shared or reposted by verified rightwing accounts. Many accounts openly supported the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) government, led by the prime minister, Narendra Modi, which has a long history of using social media to push its agenda. BJP politicians also reposted some of this material.

Deepfake videos putting words into the mouths of Narendra Modi and other Indian politicians have been exposed on the same platforms that shared them. Photograph: X

Among the examples circulating were a 2023 video of an Israeli airstrike on Gaza that was falsely claimed as an Indian strike on Pakistan, as well as an image of an Indian naval drill from the same year presented as evidence that the Indian navy had attacked and taken over Karachi port.

Video game imagery was passed off as real-life footage of India’s air force downing one of Pakistan’s JF-17 fighter jets, while footage from the Russian-Ukraine war was claimed to be scenes of “massive airstrikes on Pakistan”. Doctored AI visuals were circulated widely to show Pakistan’s defeat and visuals of a Turkish pilot was used in fabricated reports of a captured Pakistani pilot. Doctored images were used to fabricate reports of the murder of Pakistan’s popular former prime minister Imran Khan.

Many of these posts first generated by Indian social media accounts gained millions of views and the misinformation spread to some of India’s most widely watched TV news.

‘Fog of war accepted as reality’

India’s mainstream media, which have already suffered a major loss of credibility owing to their heavy pro-government stance under Modi, are facing difficult questions. Some prominent anchors have already issued apologies.

Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), an Indian human rights organisation, has filed formal complaints to the broadcasting watchdog for “serious ethical breaches” of six of the country’s most prominent television news channels in their reporting of Operation Sindoor.

Teesta Setalvad, the secretary of CJP, said the channels had completely abandoned their responsibilities as neutral news broadcasters. “Instead, they became propaganda collaborators,” she said.

Kanchan Gupta, a senior adviser to the Indian ministry of information and broadcasting, denied any government role in the misinformation campaign. He said the government had been “very alert” to the issue of misinformation and has issued explicit advice to mainstream media reporting on the conflict.

“We set up a monitoring centre which operated 24-7 and scrutinised every bit of disinformation that could have a cascading impact, and a fact check was put out immediately. Social media platforms also cooperated with us to take down vast numbers of accounts spreading this disinformation. Whatever was in the ambit of the law to stop this was done.”

Gupta said that “strong” notices had since been issued to several news channels for a violation of broadcasting rules. Nonetheless, he emphasised that the “fog of war is universally accepted as a reality. It is a fact that in any conflict situation, whether overt or covert conflict, the nature of reportage tends to go high-pitch”.

Secret Xbox ‘put on hold’ in launch cancellation for console that would’ve rivalled new Nintendo & PlayStation machines

A TOP-SECRET Xbox console that was potentially due out in just two years has been shelved.

New reports suggest the unannounced Microsoft machine has been paused indefinitely – with its planned launch cancelled entirely.

Rumours of a handheld Xbox console have been circulating for years..

And in 2024, Microsoft’s Xbox gaming boss Phil Spencer confirmed that the company was prototyping the machine.

It would’ve lived alongside the plug-in-to-your-telly Xbox Series X as a more portable option for gamers.

But a new report from Windows Central warns that Microsoft has “shifted priorities” and is pausing work on the gadget entirely.

Instead, the report notes, Microsoft will pour its efforts into boosting Windows 11 gaming performance.

That will help Microsoft boost the Asus partner gadget Project Kennan, which is a handheld gaming machine instead built by the Taiwanese tech giant.

It notes that Microsoft would still like to produce a gaming handheld in the futurebut is going to spend its time

    RIVAL MACHINES

Microsoft will be feeling the pressure from gamers to compete with its industry rivals.

Back in November 2023, Sony released the handheld PlayStation Portal.

This portable gadget device streams video games from your PS5 over the internet – and has a built-in controller.

Hands-on with the Nintendo Switch 2

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo is also nearly ready to debut its next big handheld.

The new Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to land in stores on June 5.

It’ll plug into televisions – but can also work undocked as a portable gaming device for when you’re out and about.

And Nintendo saw runaway success with its original Switch console, which launched back in 2017.

Also worrying Microsoft will be the Steam Deck, which is a handheld gaming device built by Valve.

The gaming giant is responsible for the virtual Steam store, which is one of the main ways PC gamers buy and play titles on their computers.

Valve’s Steam Deck lets players enjoy PC games on the go, and has been available since 2022.

To fend off these rivals, Microsoft has partnered with Asus to help with its upcoming Project Kennan portable device.

This will be an official Xbox partnership, but it’s not an in-house Microsoft product like the paused handheld machine would’ve been.

Microsoft is still expected to release a major new at-home console in the next few years.

This will be a sequel to the Xbox Series X, and could land in 2027 or 2028 – as a direct rival to the rumoured Sony PlayStation 6.

The Sun has asked Microsoft for comment and will update this story with any response.
